Drawing for illustration, Week 10 (12/12/2023)

Image
In the last week in the module of drawing for illustration, we completed our final session of life drawing reflecting and employing the skills and techniques we have accumulated and improved over the last four weeks. In this session we explored employing colour, alternating shapes of frame and continued exploring moving poses around the stage (similar to the previous week).  Furthermore, we were also set a brief which linked back to the beginning of the module in which we were to recreate a self portrait. In reflection, I think after these four week within life drawing I have significantly improved my technical skills such as observational proportion and creating tone but also becoming more loose with the mediums I employ. For instance, utilizing more expressive mark making, creating looser outlines of the figures form and exploring alternative framing.  1st sheet; smaller box warm ups (1 minute) and larger sketches (2-5 minute) in charcoal 2nd sheet; Moving poses (5 minute pe...

Drawing for illustration, Week 9 (28/11/2023)

In the ninth week into the module of drawing for illustration, we continued with our life drawing sessions and explored the development and employment of tone when creating form and environments within an observational composition. 1st warm up  In the first warm up I used pencil which was barely visible so switched to thin charcoal to create more defined and tonal lines. 2nd warm up In the first three sketched, I tried employing techniques which we had experimented with weeks before such as continuous line, mark making and tone. Below these compositions, I created three different shapes and used these as view points of the life model. I also took into account the model's pose to pair with the shape such as folding in on themselves for the circle.  Moving figure For this piece we created a continuous 2 minute per figure sketch of the life model moving around the space one step at a time.  3 tones In these four different pieces using three levels of tone, we increased the u...

In the eight week into the module of drawing for illustration, we continued our exploration of life drawing and incorporated developing screen-prints utilizing the drawing created during this session. During our life drawing session, we continued to explore quick sketches focusing on mark making and began enhancing our knowledge of proportion measuring utilizing sectioning the life model's figure.     1st warm up with pencil (2-5 minutes) 2nd warm up with pencil (3 minutes) Stages of measured life sketches using sectioning techniques (3 minutes) 3 compositions focusing on bold lines using marker pens Original design and plastic sheet design (for UV light printing onto the screen) Printed design on screen printing plate using UV light  Acrylic paint and screen printing medium mix Pre-created layering blocked off Printing test 1 Printing test 2 During the screen-printing process, there were a variety of vital processes, tools and techniques that we explored throughout ...

Drawing for illustration, Week 7 (14/11/2023)

In the seventh week into the module of drawing for illustration, we began our four week exploration into life drawing and the processes, mediums and techniques employed within this theme. Throughout this session with our life model, we experimented a variety of different skills and techniques in creating line, tone, form and shape in our compositions.  1: 5 minute warm up This was our first drawing and a quick warm up to test our observational skills. 2: Continued variation warm up We continued warming up with quicker sketches of different poses using different techniques such as our non dominant hand, connecting two pencils together and using both hands. After this we did a longer continuous line pieces and a 2 minute observation/3 minute drawing from memory piece. 3: 2-5 minute viewpoints Using a cardboard square we focused on viewpoints of the life model instead of the full body figure. 4: 1 minute warm ups and 3-4 minute silhouette After a short break we did three quick continu...

Drawing for illustration, Week 6 (07/11/2023)

In this sixth week into the module of drawing for illustration, we explored the medium of risograph printing and the different techniques and materials utilized within this process. The theme of this composition was where we sit, a visualization of a place we enjoy to sit and relax. This composition was done on two separate pages of paper and layout paper to create the two layers of different layers of colours in the print. During this exploration of risograph printing, I encountered a variety of different problems which I improved and was advised upon. For instance, when creating the layers of composition I didn't precisely lineup the layers so I had to trim and correctly align the designs upon later revisiting. Moreover, as I did the composition in pencil some of the layers had smudged marks across the pages. To combat this, when using the risograph printer I increased the number of printing pixels to created a blurred effect on these areas decreasing its visibility. Also, as the...

Drawing for illustration, Week 5 (31/10/2023)

Image
In this fifth week into the module of drawing for illustration, we explored the medium of dry point and the different materials and techniques employed throughout this process.  At the beginning of this process we began by creating a composition inspired by the themes and processes we had explored throughout this module within our sketchbooks. As shown below, I originally intended to utilize this design for the risograph printing session however I found the linework might have been to detailed and delicate to successfully use the processes outcome. I began by combining these two designs into one and then placing the plastic sheet over the top of the design began etching the design. For this I utilized both long and short etching tools to create small scratching into the plastic to form the dips in which the ink would be printed through. Also, to improve my view of the linework I was etching I placed a light on a low level to the surface opposite the sheet to create more shadows of ...

Drawing for illustration, Week 4 (24/10/2023)

In continuation of this week exploration into the printing making technique of Lino, I explored a number of different artists within this art form and how they visualize mark making through printing.  For instance, a Lino print artist I explored is Carlos Palomares a Mexican printmaker who predominantly creates black and white compositions to enhance the line, tone and form of they're pieces. They're work is significantly inspired by the environment and culture of Mexico, creating dramatic pieces that explore the visual elements of lighting, texture and typography. Lauren's compositions are significantly inspired by travelling and employ bold expressions of colour and form. Mushrooms (referen...
