Drawing for illustration, Week 6 (07/11/2023)

In this sixth week into the module of drawing for illustration, we explored the medium of risograph printing and the different techniques and materials utilized within this process. The theme of this composition was where we sit, a visualization of a place we enjoy to sit and relax. This composition was done on two separate pages of paper and layout paper to create the two layers of different layers of colours in the print.

During this exploration of risograph printing, I encountered a variety of different problems which I improved and was advised upon. For instance, when creating the layers of composition I didn't precisely lineup the layers so I had to trim and correctly align the designs upon later revisiting. Moreover, as I did the composition in pencil some of the layers had smudged marks across the pages. To combat this, when using the risograph printer I increased the number of printing pixels to created a blurred effect on these areas decreasing its visibility. Also, as the layers weren't accurately placed (due to the different in the page sizes) I used options available on the printer such as adjusting the placement horizontally and vertically on the printer in either millimeters or inches.

Despite these issues and trouble shooting, I significantly enjoyed exploring this medium and utilizing it potential visual language. For example, I was happy with the patchwork blanket and the alternating colours created through the layers of printing. Moreover, despite the more detailed and smaller components of the piece such as the plants not employing the boldest this medium can create I was able to explore the different options within the printer such as pixel size and how it would effect the texture of the lines.
