Drawing for illustration, Week 5 (31/10/2023)
In this fifth week into the module of drawing for illustration, we explored the medium of dry point and the different materials and techniques employed throughout this process.
At the beginning of this process we began by creating a composition inspired by the themes and processes we had explored throughout this module within our sketchbooks. As shown below, I originally intended to utilize this design for the risograph printing session however I found the linework might have been to detailed and delicate to successfully use the processes outcome. I began by combining these two designs into one and then placing the plastic sheet over the top of the design began etching the design. For this I utilized both long and short etching tools to create small scratching into the plastic to form the dips in which the ink would be printed through. Also, to improve my view of the linework I was etching I placed a light on a low level to the surface opposite the sheet to create more shadows of the linework.
Furthermore, once I had completed the etching of the design plate I then moved onto the printing. The ink we used for this printing was a oil based water soluble printing ink which we layered onto the plastic sheet and then gradually removed at different levels with a dauber (bunched up fabric). Once we had reached the level of ink on the plate we wanted, then using a rolling printing press we printed our designs onto slightly damped printing paper.
